FAQ

What should I be prepared for?

Be as prepared as possible. Making a list of things you will need during your move is always helpful. Never pack any medications you or your family, or your pets will need immediately.

For long distance moves, be prepared with clothing for as many days as it will take for the move and to unpack your belongings. This can include work clothes, school clothes for children and any other special items you may need during the moving period.

Do I have to be present on moving day?

AMEX Moving & Storage will not pick up a moving shipment if the customer is not present at the pick-up location to receive and sign the bill of lading, order for service, and other required legal documents.

However, the customer may designate a representative/agent to be present at the pick-up and sign the contracts on their behalf. The person receiving the items must be over the age of 18 and the customer must complete the designation process with their moving agent prior to moving day.

How can I verify if a moving company is licensed?

Your moving company needs to have a valid US DOT and MC license number.

What is a Binding Estimate or Quote?

A Binding Estimate/Quote is an agreement (contract) made in advance that guarantees the total cost of the move based upon the quantities and services shown on the quote. A lot of moving companies also use the term Flat Price.

Note: Be aware of Flat Pricing/Binding Quotes – Some moving companies provide “Flat Prices” or “Binding Quotes” based on the amount of weight or volume quoted/estimated without informing your of possible increases. Your price will increase according to your total weight or volume AFTER your shipment has been loaded. A Binding Quote/Flat Price is a final price provided in advance PRIOR to loading your shipment. AMEX Moving & Storage supplies honest estimates and rates based on exactly what you are moving and your volume/weight. Weight is usually not a factor unless you are transporting bulky or heavy weight items such as pianos, large electronics such as refrigerators, motorized equipment or vehicles, etc…

Does my homes owners or renters insurance cover my move?

In many cases, it does but it all depends on your policy and insurance company. It is always recommended that you call them first before making any decisions on additional coverage as they may already have you covered.

Do you offer full packing services?

AMEX Moving & Storage offers the best possible packing and crating services at the most affordable rates. Full packing is additional but many times worth the expense. Your items will need to be securely packed and/or wrapped. The condition they arrive in on delivery day will depend on how they are packed. That is also why we will not transport anything unless is it packed correctly or the customer assumes responsibility for that item. Your items and their care is our top priority.

How do I know when a moving company is “the one”?

Oh, you’ll know. The company will meet all of the criteria on your checklist. It will be fully licensed and insured; there will be no hidden fees related to taxes, stairs, furniture protection; it will offer discounts; and, of course, your loved ones, and even strangers, will rave about it. Along with the company, be sure to connect with your family members, friends, neighbors, and check reviews on Google, BBB, My moving Reviews, Great Guys Moving, Facebook and more to find the best Moving company for your move.

Are my items insured with your company?

A moving company offers valuation for your goods, which is not technically insurance. Valuation refers to how much a moving company will pay for your belongings if they are damaged or lost by the moving company. Valuation is regulated by the State or the Federal Government. (The State when you’re making a move. The Federal Government when you’re making a move that crosses State lines.) All licensed moving companies include the basic valuation in the cost of your move. In New Jersey, basic valuation is $.60 per pound per item.

Valuation is based on how much something weighs. So a one pound bag of sugar and a one pound bag of diamonds is valued exactly the same. Its valuation in New Jersey is: $.60. If it’s worth more than $.60 per pound per item to you, you may want to purchase additional insurance from a third party that sells insurance NOT from your moving company. You can also purchase additional valuation directly from your moving company.

Do you offer services on weekends and holidays?

AMEX Moving & Storage offers moving services all year long, 7 days a week.

We do have a limited number of slots per day which is how we maintain quality service for every customer. The deposit allows to ensure we are working with serious customers. How can I decrease the cost of my move?

There are many ways to decrease the cost of your move. First you should make sure you pack all your items effectively. Look up videos on how to pack each item or boxes to ensure you do it correctly. Second biggest factor is flexibility. Being flexible on pick up and delivery will give you substantial discounts. Ask your moving rep what they can offer you with flexibility discounts.

What is a bill of lading?

AMEX Moving & Storage issues a bill of lading for every move and customer. Your bill of lading is the receipt for your goods and the contract for the transportation of your goods. Every mover is required to provide a completed bill of lading for every shipment being transported. The driver who loads your shipment must provide you with a copy. It is your responsibility to read and understand the bill of lading before you sign it. The bill of lading identifies the mover, specifies the terms and conditions, total charges and the valuation coverage of your shipment and the amount the mover will be liable for in the event of loss or damage to your shipment. The bill of lading is an important document – do not lose or misplace your copy.

What is a Non-Binding Estimate?

A Non-Binding Estimate or Quote is an estimated price of what the mover believes the total cost of the move will be based. This estimate is usually based upon the potential weight or volume of the shipment and any additional services requested. The moving company will base the final charges upon the actual weight/volume of your shipment or items.

What is an Inventory List? Is it important?

The driver will usually create an inventory list of your shipment as he/she loads it (but it’s not required by law). When completed, the inventory list will provide a detailed, descriptive list of your household goods and the condition of each item when received by the mover. Be sure that everything listed on the inventory is listed accurately. You will find things written on the inventory like PBO (packed by owner). You will also find CP (carrier packed) or PBM (packed by mover); these are two important listings. You will also notice that in the middle column on the inventory sheet a line that has many letters associated with a specific item.

This is where the driver uses inventory code to make note of the condition of each particular item. To understand these codes, look at the top of the inventory sheet for the chart or key that explains what each code stands for such as: C – chipped, SC – scratched. This is a basic way for the driver to make note of any existing damage.

This inventory is for you to keep track of what is being loaded and the condition of each item. This inventory should also be used at the destination when your shipment is delivered. Use the inventory to verify the items that are delivered, note an exception to the condition of the items as they are brought into your home and point out the damage to the driver. The inventory sheet is the document that will be used when the claims process is initiated so it is important to have the damage clearly noted.

If you have specific dates you need, that is also possible.

You can schedule a guaranteed delivery date which in some cases can increase the price of your estimate but will get you the dates you need.

To get the lowest quoted price from any moving company, please be flexible with your delivery dates which can result in more affordable estimates.
